Homemade Greek Seasoning

Greek Seasoning is quick and easy to make at home with pantry spices, and will add tons of flavor to your chicken, pork, steak, and vegetables.

Homemade Greek Seasoning Recipe

Chicken can be boring and there is no shortage of spices out there to add to it. But let’s shake things up a bit and add some Mediterranean flavors.

Of course you can buy a spice mix from the store, but they always contain “extra” stuff that doesn’t add any extra favor, just keeps them expensive. So I like to make my own!

This recipe is way better than the Cavender’s you find in the store. Trust me! It’s perfect for making a Greek salad dressing on this chopped Greek Salad.

Ingredients Needed

Basil – Use dried basil and not fresh.

Dill – Dried dill is perfect.

Garlic powder – Use garlic powder rather than granulated garlic because it is finer if possible.

Onion flakes – If all you have is onion powder, that will work fine too.

Oregano – Greek oregano is best but use what you have.

Parsley – Be sure to use dried parsley flakes, as fresh will not be shelf-stable and will cause your steak seasoning to clump together.

Rosemary – Rosemary has a woody and almost pine-like flavor.

Thyme – The flavor profile of thyme is both sweet and savory, with hints of peppermint, lemon and oregano.

Lemon pepper seasoning – If you are making a dressing or marinade use lemon juice.

Marjoram – Marjoram tends to be more on the sweet side with floral scents.

Salt and pepper – Sea salt and fresh ground black pepper.

Cinnamon and nutmeg – Although mostly thought of as “sweet” spices, both cinnamon and nutmeg add a kick.

How long does it last?

If you store your Greek seasoning recipe in an airtight container, it will last for up to six months. If you don’t use it all before then:)

How do you store it?

The best way to store any of your spices or spice mixes is in a glass, airtight container, out of direct sunlight, and in a dark and cool place.

I love to make a large batch and store it in a mason jar. I use it so much it doesn’t last long.

Not next to the stove, on the counter top, under a window with full sun. Unless you are planning on using the entire batch in a week.

Depending on the recipe, I like to start with 1-2 teaspoons of spice mix. You can always add more if you need more flavor.

How to Use Greek Seasoning

Is it gluten free, paleo, keto, or whole 30 compliant?

Yes, it is all three! And this homemade mix doesn’t contain MSG! The best benefit of making your own spice blends.

Is it the same thing as Mediterranean Seasoning?

They are basically the same only Mediterranean flavors usually include cloves and cardamom.

Authentic Greek flavor contains marjoram that is not usually found in Mediterranean seasoning.

Tapas Tips & Tricks

  • Mix with red wine vinegar, olive oil, and lemon zest for a quick dressing.
  • Make it without the salt first and then decide on the amount of salt that works best for you.
  • I use about 2 tablespoons per pound of meat or vegetables.
  • Add it to some olive oil to make a great bread dip!
  • Package it up into nice bottles with a label and some pretty ribbon and give it out as gifts for the holidays or a housewarming.
  • Great for any Mediterranean cuisine like this Lemon Pepper Seasoning.

      1. Thank you so much! I asked the guys at our favorite Greek restaurant about it and I was skeptical too. I’m also not a huge cinnamon fan so I REALLY didn’t want to add it but you are so right. It is what makes it perfect! I am so glad that you like it! Check out my meatloaf seasoning🙂 It’s my new favorite!

    4. This recipe sounds great! Can’t wait to make it. How much spice and vinegar/olive oil do you need to make salad dressing?

      1. I start with 2 tablespoons of the spice mix and add to 1/4 cup vinegar. Shake and then add 1/2 cup olive oil. If you want more vinegar/oil you can adjust from there.

    5. You say this lasts 6 months? Mine doesn’t last 6 weeks! Well mainly because by then the container is empty and I have to make more! This is THE BEST seasoning I have ever used and it goes with everything. It is my usual goto. Try it on some breakfast potatoes.

    6. Hi, this recipe sounds amazing. I can’t wait to try it. Does the recipe call for ground thyme and marjoram or thyme and marjoram leaves?

I didn’t have a couple ingredients and used what I had. The seasoning mix I made was awesome on ground chicken. I can only imagine how good it would be with all the seasonings LOL!

      1. Absolutely! I love Greek seasoning on my french fries! I would season just after they come out as they herbs and spices can burn a bit and get bitter if you put it on before air frying.

This looks so fresh and wonderful. Pretty colors. And I bet it’s fabulous on chicken. I’d also love to do a roasted chickpea with Greek seasonings! Yum!

    14. We LOVE this recipe. We went through it and now I am making it again tonight. It is wonderful on fish fillets. It’s light, yet perfect. We love it in deviled egg salad. I use it all the time. Mmmm, good. Thanks for this treat.

      1. I don’t typically grind this mix, but you can certainly do it. I use a mortar and pestle when I grind down my everything bagel seasoning so I can control just how fine I get it and I can’t really do that with a spice grinder. Or you can just add the spices that you want to grind down and then add the other ones after. Thank you!

      1. Yes, they are. It makes it shelf stable. If you want to revive them, just rub the spice mix between your fingers or hands before adding to your food.
