Watermelon Wine Slushie

This Watermelon Wine Slushie is incredibly refreshing! Made in the blender, with just 3 ingredients and a couple of minutes, you will have the perfect drink to serve at BBQs and Summer get togethers.

Picture this: it’s the middle of summer, you’ve worked in the garden or done some landscaping, and you’re getting ready for some friends to come over to relax and grill for the evening.

You get cleaned up and start getting the food ready for the grill, and your friends will be arriving within the hour. You’re looking around and then your realize, you didn’t organize any kind of punch or drink for the evening!

Have no fear, there is no need to panic, you probably have everything for this delicious frozen drink right now in the fridge or on your kitchen counter! A nice frozen wine slushie with the refreshing watermelon flavor will be perfect!

This delicious and cooling Watermelon Wine Slushie will hit every spot you have for a fun summer drink. The beautiful pink color from the watermelon adds an air of tropical, while the fresh mint adds a touch of cool help you feel refreshed and relaxed in the summer heat.

A little bit of your favorite white wine to mellow out the evening and pair nicely with grilled dinner is the perfect addition to make this a crisp grown-up beverage.

I usually have a bottle of my favorite Moscato or Riesling, but any light and fresh white wine works in this recipe. Watermelon isn’t too sweet, so if you like a sweeter wine to add sugary sweetness try one of my favorites, if you like a more full bodied flavor you want to grab a bottle of Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay.

Ingredients Needed

Fruit – Make sure the watermelon is peeled (if needed), seeded, and cubed to make blending easier. I like to use a fruit that has a lot of water like melon and berries.

Thick fruit like apples and oranges tend to have extra “skin” on the inside which makes the slushie thick.

Wine – I like to pick my wine depending on the fruit. Red or blue berries pair well with a light red wine like Pinot Noir.

Melons and light berries pair well with white wine or rose. For this recipe, I use a Pinot Grigio which has hints of melon to bring out the flavor.

Ice – You can use crushed ice or you can freeze your wine into ice cubes and use those instead. This will keep the slushie from diluting when the it melts.

You can also freeze fruit juice instead of water and use those as ice cubes for this recipe.

How to Make Wine Slushies

First: Chill glasses for 30 minutes ahead of time or add ice to the serving glasses.

Second: Add the watermelon, wine, and ice to a high powered blender and blend until slush but not too long or it will melt.

Third: Pour into chilled serving glasses, or empty ice from glasses and pour in the cocktail. Enjoy!

Tapas Tips & Tricks

  • I love Pinot Grigio with this recipe because it’s a more acidic white wine which balances the sweetness of the watermelon. 
  • If your watermelon is not super sweet, or if you like sweeter drinks you can also add 3 Tbsp honey, triple sec, simple syrup, or agave syrup. 
  • You can also use frozen fruit and skip the ice. However I like the texture and flavor better with the fresh watermelon + ice combo.
  • Freeze the wine and skip the ice cubes all together. Pour the wine into an ice cube tray the night before and freeze until ready to use. Fun wine cubes!!
  • Chill your wine glasses ahead of time or toss some ice cubes in the serving glasses until ready to use. Then simply remove the ice cubes and add the wine slushy.

HOW DO YOU MAKE WATERMELON WINE SLUSHIES WITHOUT A BLENDER?

You can freeze the fruit and wine in a large baking pan. Every few hours, scrape with a fork until the whole batch is done.

CAN YOU FREEZE WINE INTO ICE CUBES?

Wine has a lower alcohol content or alcohol by volume (ABV) so it can freeze unlike other liquor or cordials. I like to freeze wine and use in the summer to keep my wine from diluting.

HOW DO YOU MAKE A HOMEMADE SLUSHIE?

Combine fruit, ice, wine, and a little sweetener if needed. Blend until you have the right consistency!

HOW DO YOU THAW FROZEN WINE?

If you run out of thawed wine and only have frozen wine, you can thaw it overnight in the fridge for the best result.

Ingredients

  • 7 Cups watermelon peeled, seeded, cubed
