Pumpkin Spice Season

I can always tell the season is changing when all the pumpkin spice latte drinks come out. They ring in the start of pumpkin season, and all the delicious recipes that come with it.

This blend of spices is pretty much the official Fall flavor and I look forward to all the pumpkin bread I can eat!

When it comes to baking I love to use a homemade spice blend. They are super easy and you can control what goes in it. If you like more ginger, add it in. I use less cinnamon as a personal preference, so I always make my own mix.

You also don’t have those “extra” things in them like the grocery store versions. Use this pumpkin pie spice in all your fall baking recipes from savory dishes like this pumpkin puff pastry, to pumpkin desserts like this pumpkin cake.

Ingredients Needed

Cinnamon – Use ground cinnamon and not sticks. Saigon Cinnamon is the best blend of cinnamon and I highly recommend using it over ALL the others.

Ginger – Ground ginger is pretty strong. If you are sensitive to it, I would start with half the amount.

Ground cloves – This is the one difference between this and apple pie spice.

Nutmeg – Fresh grated is best! But use up what you have in your pantry first.

Ground allspice – If you don’t have this, add more cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.

*Optional ingredient to add is black pepper. King Arthur baking company recommends it but it’s completely up to you.*

Can you substitute allspice for pumpkin pie spice?

If your recipe calls for allspice but don’t have any, you can substitute this homemade pumpkin pie spice recipe. But I would not recommend using just allspice in a recipe that calls for pumpkin spice. It’s a little on the strong side.

Is it the same as Apple Pie Spice?

The two mixes are basically the same. Apple pie spice doesn’t have cloves in it. If you like cloves, add a little with the apple pie spice and you are all set.

    1. Depending on how much you like in your pie, I would start with 1-2 teaspoons and taste. Then add more if necessary.

  1. Great idea! We are trying to cut back on processed food so this fits right in! It also looks like a great little cooking and measuring activity for the kids!

Hi Jennifer, every Autumn I see Pumpkin Spice invade everything. And I have always promised to myself that I was going to try it sooner or later. But I live in Australia and I can’t seem to find anything related to it. So I was thinking to make my own spice and try using it. And thanks to your recipe I can make it and try it. Will def let you know how it goes 🙂

    1. Thanks Dalia! I was never a big fan of it but when I quit eating sugar the spice didn’t bother me as much anymore so I like putting it in more things! I also hate paying so much more for something I can make at home and change the levels of spice to what I want it to be. I like less cinnamon than most so having this control is awesome!
