Why do they call it Hawaiian pizza?

Hawaiian Pizza is one of the best, unconventional pizza combinations around. Some even go as far as to say it their favorite pizza!

Right up there with Margherita and Buffalo Chicken, Hawaiian Pizza takes all the great aspects of pizza, the crust and cheese, and ups the flavor level with pineapple and ham!

The sweet pineapple contrasts so well with the salty ham and the melty cheese that you can’t simply resist it!

Turns out that the inventor of the Hawaiian Pizza wanted to use pineapple together with ham and named it after the brand of canned pineapple he used on the pizza.

Sounds perfect for sliders doesn’t it? You’re going to want to make these, and even this funeral sandwiches recipe, for all your upcoming gatherings.

Ingredients Needed

Buns – Use Hawaiian rolls because that’s fun, or any slider bun.

Ham – I like to use sliced, cooked ham that is either leftover from a dinner or grab some from the deli.

Cheese – Monterey Jack cheese is best. Be sure to grate your own as it melts better.

Pineapple – Use crushed pineapple and pineapple juice.

Kitchen staples – Sour cream, unsalted butter, oregano, onion powder, poppy seeds.

How to Make Hawaiian Pizza Sliders

First: Combine the melted butter, pineapple juice, onion powder, oregano, and poppy seeds. Stir to mix completely. Set aside.

Second: Slice the slider rolls and place the bottoms in a 9×13 baking dish. Spread the sour cream on the bottoms of the rolls.

Layer the ham slices on the sour cream. Spread on the crushed pineapple. Cover with the shredded mozzarella.

Third: Place the tops on the sliders. Pour the marinade evenly over the sliders. Cover and let sit at least 4 hours or overnight in the refrigerator.

Fourth: When getting ready to prepare, set out the sliders so they can come to room temperature for at least 15 minutes and preheat the oven to 350 degrees. This helps the cheese melt evenly.

Fifth: Cook uncovered for 30 minutes or until cheese is melty and the bun tops are crispy. Remove and serve warm!

Can I use a different cheese?

If you don’t have Monterey Jack cheese you can also use plain mozzarella cheese. Cheddar or Colby Jack will change the flavor profile.

Can I make these in advance?

These are best when assembled at least 4 hours in advance. The marinade needs a chance to get into the sliders. I like them best prepared the night before they are served.

You can also assemble and bake these ahead of time. Reheat in 350F oven for 15 minutes when ready to enjoy.

How to Reheat Leftovers

Keep any leftovers stored in the refrigerator in an air tight container for up to 3 days.

To enjoy, pop in the microwave for 10-30 seconds or until warmed through. You can also pop them in the oven until the cheese is melted.

Wrap in foil to keep the sliders from drying out.

Favorite Slider Recipes

I love a slider! For a party or even as a fun dinner that the kids will love too. My favorite recipes include these cheeseburger sliders, these club sliders, and these Italian veggie sliders.

Tapas Tips & Tricks

  • I like to separate my buns before adding to the pan. That way the cheese can get in between the sliders and get all melty.
  • Hawaiian rolls are sold in packs of 12 and this recipe calls for 15 to fill the pan. You can just use 12 and overlap the meat and cheese or you can grab a second package of roll.
  • If you don’t like Hawaiian rolls, or have them, you can use plain dinner rolls.
  • Shredded cheese works great but you can also use slices of mozzarella cheese or Monterey Jack cheese.
  • Italian seasoning can be substituted for the oregano and onion powder. I also like garlic powder in these too.

Leave them in the dish and take to the party. You can serve room temperature or heat them there and the cheese will be all melty again and help you to get that pizza flavor in a sandwich!
