Baked Sweet Potato Fries

If you love french fries as much as I do, you are going to love these! I have never really been a fan of sweet potato fries but the ones I always had were soggy, or they were coated in chipotle seasoning which I am not a fan of. But these are a game changer!

In less than 30 minutes you will have crispy sweet potato fries. Perfect for dipping ketchup, ranch dressing, and even honey butter. And easier to clean up than deep frying. Healthier too!

If you are a skeptic like me, you have to try these. It will change your mind for sure.

My other favorite sweet potato recipes include these sweet potato latkes, this sweet potato dip, sweet potato casserole, roasted sweet potatoes, and sweet potato chips!

How to Make Homemade Sweet Potato Fries Recipe

First: Preheat oven to 450F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper.

Second: Peel the sweet potatoes and cut into strips that are roughly ¼ – ½ inch thick. Place them in a large bowl and sprinkle with cornstarch. Cover and shake, stir, or toss the fries to coat them as best you can.

Third: Drizzle in the olive oil and add the other seasonings. Toss to coat and spread into a single layer on the baking sheet.

How long do they last?

Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days in an airtight container. Reheat in the oven or air fryer.

If you have any leftover I really recommend freezing them. Just spread any leftover fries on a cookie sheet and freeze. Then store in a freezer safe, airtight container for up to 3 weeks.

Remove and reheat them from frozen in the air fryer (400F) for about 4-5 minutes. They will be crispy and yummy all over again!

Serving suggestions

These crispy fries are great on their own, but I love them with a cool and creamy dip. Fry sauce is my favorite dipping sauce, but this Mississippi Comeback sauceBloomin onion sauce, and this Alabama white sauce are delicious with them too!

Air Fryer Directions

Preheat your air fryer to 400℉ for 12 minutes. Be sure to preheat the whole time. You want it to be nice and hot to get the crisp edges.

Prep them like normal and spread in the air fryer basket. Be sure to leave plenty of room between the fries so the air can circulate around all sides of the fries. Air fry for 12 minutes, shaking or flipping half way through.

How to Fix Soggy Fries

There are a few ways to crisp the fries back up. You can bake them in the oven for 3-5 minutes. You can also use an air fryer.

Preheat it to 400F. Spread them in the basket, leaving some space around them, and cook for 2-4 minutes.

Do I need to soak them in cold water before baking?

When I make regular french fries from russet potatoes or make wedges I always soak mine to help remove some of the starch.

But with sweet potatoes you don’t need to. Just be sure that you pat the cut fries dry with paper towels before tossing in the cornstarch.

Tapas Tips & Tricks

  • Line the pan with parchment paper or foil. I would spray the foil with nonstick spray so it doesn’t stick.
  • Let them cool slightly before you try them.
  • Don’t skip the cornstarch step as this makes them the crispiest sweet potato fries you have ever tried.
  • Skip the spices and just use salt and pepper if you like. I love mine with Italian seasoning
  • For some heat, I like a little chili powder or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • When baking these, make sure you have them in only 1 layer. Spread them out to get heat on all sides.
  • You may need to bake these in batches depending on the size of your sheet pan.
  • If you happen to have some fries that come out darker than the others, that’s ok. Smaller and thinner fries will caramelize quicker and get sweeter.
