Ingredients Needed
Butter – You will soften this to room temperature. Use the highest quality real butter that you can find. You can also use a flavored butter like roasted garlic.
Cream cheese – Softened to room temperature. If you want a “pure” butter board you can substitute more butter for the cream cheese.
Toppings – I like to use everything bagel seasoning, hot pepper jelly, and toasted pecans and honey.
Dippers – Sliced bread, crackers, and crostini would be great vehicles for all that butter.
Serving Board – You can use any wooden board you like.

What is a butter board?
This trend is now being seen all over TikTok and other social media. A butter board is the next charcuterie board trend and showcased as a deconstructed compound butter.
Soft butter is spread over a wooden cutting board, honey drizzled, and sprinkled with condiments such as salt, black pepper, chili flakes, lemon zest, fruit or vegetable slices, herbs or edible flowers.
Crackers, crostini, dried fruit and crusty bread are perfect to serve with a butter board.
Which flowers are edible?
Edible flowers will add beauty, color and flavor to your dishes.
There are many varieties of edible flowers which include the following: Citrus blossom, clover, daisies, dandelions, hibiscus, honeysuckle, lavender, lilac, mums, nasturtium, pansies, and roses.
What butter is best for a butter board?
When it comes to butter you have lots of options. I recommend the highest quality unsalted butter, as this will be the best blank canvas for your seasonings and flavors.
The best type for a butter board is going to be rich and have a high butterfat content, usually above 80%.
You will find this in clarified butter, European style butter, Amish butter and Irish butter. These butters are often a beautiful, vibrant yellow color and perfect for a gorgeous butter board.
Butter Board Ideas
I like to limit the amount of toppings I use because I don’t want a busy butter board, just one that showcases a few flavors.
With this in mind, there are so many toppings you could add to a butter board. It’s really a matter of personal preference, but here are some of my favorites:
- Red pepper flakes
- Green onions or chives
- Nuts – Such as pecans, slivered almonds or walnuts
- Flaky sea salt – Sea salt or pink Himalayan salt are good choices
- Fresh herbs – Rosemary, oregano, thyme, dill or basil
- Sliced red onion
- Lemon or lime zest
- Dollops of jam or jelly
- Fresh fruit or vegetables
- Edible flowers
How long does it last?
You can make this ahead of time, cover with some foil or plastic wrap and store the board in the fridge. When you are ready to serve it, simply uncover, add bread and enjoy!
Favorite Party Trays for A Crowd
I love having people over and entertaining, especially when it’s easy and stress free. I find that a board or food bar is a great option for a crowd or if you have people that have specific dietary needs.
Some of my favorites are my Walking Tacos, an Antipasto Platter, and my modern version of a Pickle Platter.
