Green Onion Dip

Green Onion Dip is one of my favorite sides to potato chips and chopped veggies like carrots and bell peppers. While the classic store bought packets are great, since discovering this recipe, the two don’t even compare.

This recipe is fresh and so creamy, the tangy lemon juice compliments the bold green onion and parsley so well, you will want to make a double batch!

Definitely a classic crowd-pleaser dip that is great for any occasion. Take just 5 minutes to whip it together, plus a bit of chill time to settle the flavors together, and it’s ready to serve.

Feel free to customize this green onion chip dip by adding some heat to it with cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce, it is so versatile in flavor.

We love this dip all year round from super bowl to game day to Thanksgiving, it’s one of those recipes we make again and again! Try it with these Cheesy Fries with Bacon or Crispy Popcorn Shrimp for an amazing appetizer or snack.

Worktop with small balls filled with ingredients including: Cream Cheese
Sour Cream
Green Onions
Parsley
Lemon Juice
Garlic
Salt and Pepper

Ingredients Needed

Cream Cheese – Use full fat, reduced fat, or fat-free. To prevent clumps, soften or bring it to room temperature before blending.

Sour Cream –  Or use plain Greek yogurt for this if you like.

Green Onions – AKA Scallions. If you can choose your own fresh green onions at a vegetable stall go for thinner ones if you prefer a milder taste or thicker ones for a more bold flavor.

Parsley – I always prefer to use fresh herbs, but you can substitute for dried ones if you need to, just use half the amount.

Lemon Juice – Freshly squeezed lemon juice is best.

Kitchen Staples – Garlic, salt, and pepper.

How to make Green Onion Dip with Sour Cream

How long does it last?

Countertop: Try to only leave the dip out on the counter for a maximum of 2 hours at a time as it is full of dairy. If the party might last longer, only put out half and then refill the container when it’s empty.

Refrigerator: Place in an airtight container or cover tightly in plastic wrap for up to 7 days. Stir before serving again.

Can I freeze it?

I wouldn’t recommend freezing this dip as dairy tends to separate if frozen, and the herbs will turn brown!

Are green onions and scallions the same thing?

To put it shortly, yes. The difference between green onions and scallions is simply how they have been labeled in the store.

However, spring onions are different in that their bulbs are bigger than those of green onions, yet you can switch them out in recipes that call for either of them.

Serving Suggestions

Green Onion Dip goes with just about anything! We love it with chips, crackers, and chopped vegetables as a sharing snack.

But you can also use it as a condiment for a salad, as a topping for tacos, or to make that sandwich extra delicious.

Tapas Tips & Tricks

  • You can serve this dip straight away, but it is best served after cooling in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to 2 hours to let the flavors set.
  • Put some heat into your green onion dip by adding finely chopped jalapenos, a dash of your favorite hot sauce, or some cayenne pepper!
  • You can blend the mixture in your food processor for a smooth green onion dip without bits.
  • Use a non-dairy yogurt instead of the sour cream and cream cheese for a dairy-free dip.
  • This is tasty and easy like my Whipped Feta Dip and my Ham Roll Up Dip.
